A clinical trial is a medical research study that may potentially improve patient health outcomes. The goal of a clinical trial is to find better and safer ways to prevent, screen for, diagnose, or treat disease. A clinical trial may also look for ways to improve patients’ quality of life.

Patient navigators play an important role in patient care. They also have an important role in helping patients join clinical trials. Part of the patient navigator’s role is to provide information about clinical trials. They help patients understand what a clinical trial is and how it works. They also support patients as they decide whether a clinical trial is right for them. If barriers keep a patient from joining a clinical trial, a patient navigator can help by address those barriers.

This course gives an overview of clinical trials and describes ways patient navigators can help patients join or stay in a clinical trial.

What is a clinical trial?

A clinical trial is a medical research study done to find safer and more effective ways to improve patient health. A clinical trial may study ways to prevent, detect, diagnose or treat disease. A clinical trial may also study ways to improve the quality of life for patients with a disease.

Why do patient navigators need to know about clinical trials?

Patient navigators have a unique role on the healthcare team. They often spend more time with patients than other healthcare team members and learn more about patients’ personal lives. Because of the trust they build, patients look to navigators for information and help. If navigators know about clinical trials they can give patients information and guidance. If navigators do not know about clinical trials, they may give incorrect or too little information. This could keep patients from joining a clinical trial that may improve their health.
