Preventive Healthcare 101

What will you learn in this course?

In this course you will learn about preventive healthcare, staying healthy and risk factors that may cause disease. You will also learn how to encourage clients to form healthy habits and avoid habits that may be harmful. Client stories and videos with “quiz” questions will help you apply what you learn.

  • Define preventive health
  • Describe your role in educating clients and encouraging healthy lifestyles
  • Identify ways to talk with clients about risk and disease
  • Describe common screening tests
  • Suggest screening tests for specific clients
  • List protective factors and lifestyle habits that help prevent disease
  • List common risk factors for chronic disease

How is the course organized?

This course has four parts:

  • Helping Clients with Lifestyle Change. Learn about your role in educating clients and encouraging healthy lifestyles.
  • Primary Care and Health Screening. Learn about health screening tests that check for chronic disease. Also learn where to find recommendations for screening tests and what tests to suggest to clients.
  • Protective and Risk Factors. A protective factor is something that keeps us from getting a disease. A risk factor makes us more likely to have a chronic disease. Several protective factors and risk factors are described in this section.
  • Resources. This course is loaded with web links, videos, quizzes and games for you and your clients. These resources are from reliable sources such as government agencies and non-profit organizations. All the resources you find in the course are also listed in the resources section. You can also print the list of resources and use them on the job. This section also includes some information about how to recognize a reliable web resource.
